Professor Felix von Bormann, who taught at the University of Hamburg between 1939 and 1942, accompanied the operation in Azaryčy from December 31, 1943 to May 15, 1944 as a consulting physician and army hygienist. In his field report, he describes the events from his own perspective.
In his report, von Bormann recommends coordinating the use of tross women and sutlers militarily. According to von Bormann, the fact that the occasional prohibition issued by commanders to take tross women with them had led to the local population being used by the soldiers for such services, which, in turn, would have increased the risk of a typhus outbreak within German troops. As a consequence, von Bormann advised the use of non-local women who were to be monitored just like the soldiers and fed according to Wehrmacht standards.
