The press release published on 13 August 2018 on the website of the socialist youth organization Socialist Youth Germany – The Falcons (Sozialistische Jugend Deutschland – Die Falken) reports on the visit of six survivors of the Azaryčy death camps in Lüneburg. The focus lies on the role of the 110th Infantry Division from Lüneburg and the local memorial commemorating the soldiers of this division who died.
„Mit ihrem Besuch folgen die drei Frauen und drei Männer im Alter zwischen 72 und 86 Jahren einer Einladung der Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes (VVN) Lüneburg und des Arbeitskreises Erinnerungskultur an der Leuphana-Universität. „Mit unserer Einladung wollen wir den Opfern der NS Terrortaten die ihnen zustehende Wahrnehmung einräumen und die historischen Tatsachen ins Blickfeld rücken“, so Ulrike Waltemade, eine der Organisatorinnen des Besuches. Ein prekäres Faktum überschattet den Besuch der Überlebenden in Lüneburg: Am Gra[a]lwall steht ein nach dem 2. Weltkrieg errichtetes „Ehrenmal“ für die toten Soldaten der ehemaligen 110. I. D. Die von den Infanteristen Gequälten und Getöteten blendet das Denkmal aus. 1960 hat die Stadtverwaltung dieses Denkmal amtlich in ihre Obhut genommen – wovon sich die politischen Gremien bis heute nicht offiziell distanziert haben.“1 (German original)

One precarious fact overshadows the survivors’ visit to Lüneburg: a memorial erected after the Second World War for the dead soldiers of the former 110th Infatery Division stands on Gra[a]lwall. The memorial ignores those tortured and killed by the infantrymen. In 1960, the city administration officially took this memorial into its care – something the political bodies have not officially distanced themselves from to this day.” (Translation of the German original)
