On March 20, 1944, the SD Sonderkommando stated in its final report that although there had been fatigue among both the army troops and the civilians during the strenuous marches to the final camps, they had not recorded a single case of unnecessarily harsh treatment, opposition or assault. This statement stands in stark contrast to previous estimates in the same report of estimated 537 people who died during transportation to the final camps.
