German soldiers left their positions in the night of March 16/17, 1944, thus completing the shift of the front line. The deported civilians remained in the camps near Azaryčy.
The final report of the 9th Army headquarter states that Soviet reconnaissance forces only approached the camps slowly. They were able to make contact with the deportees the following day. German aerial reconnaissance finally detected eastbound movement of large groups of people, indicating the transport of civilians out of the camps.
