“In March 1944, the German Wehrmacht committed one of its greatest crimes of the Second World War by deporting around 50.000 civilians from the area around Azaryčy in Belarus and locking them up in camps where they were abused as human shields against the advance of Soviet soldiers. This act led to the deaths of around 9.000 people.”1 (Translation of the German original)

More than sixty years later, students at RWTH Aachen University have made this crime the subject of an extensive research project. They want to present their findings in a documentary film and a book. For their research, they traveled to Belarus, interviewed contemporary witnesses and researched in the state archives.
