In April 1944, only weeks after the liberation of the Azaryčy camps, the Sovjet Newspaper Pravda published excerpts from a report filed by the “Extraordinary State Commission for the Establishment and Investigation of the Atrocities of the German Fascist Invaders and Their Accomplices and the Damage They Caused to Citizens, Collective Farms, Public Organizations, State Enterprises and Institutions of the USSR (ChGK)” that had investigated the camps within days of the German retreat.

The extermination of Soviet people by the Nazis through typhus infection.
It has now been established that the Nazi scoundrels, in connection with the defeats of the German army on the Soviet-German front and the changed situation, began to widely practice new brutal methods of exterminating Soviet people. One of these methods is the spread of a typhus epidemic among the Soviet population and parts of the Red Army, for which the Nazis, as it turned out, are organizing special concentration camps at the front line of their defense.” (Translation of the Russian original)
